Finished sizeStitches ÷ stitches per inch120 ÷ 14 = 8.57 in
Metric sizeInches × 2.548.57 × 2.54 = 21.8 cm
Cut fabricFinished + 2 × margin8.57 + 6 = 14.57 in
HoopSmallest ≥ diagonal + 1 in12.12 + 1 = 13.12, so a 14 in hoop
Thread per stitch(2√2 + 2) × (25.4 ÷ count) × 1.5 mm13.14 mm
Metres of flossStitches × thread × strands ÷ 6 ÷ 10004,000 stitches, 2 strands: 17.5 m
SkeinsMetres ÷ 8, rounded up17.5 ÷ 8, so 3 skeins

One full cross runs two diagonals across the square and two steps along its back. The 1.5 factor covers tails and travel between stitches. Dividing by 6 converts strands into whole skein lengths, because a skein holds six strands.

Beyond a 14 in hoop, use a scroll frame or Q-Snap. They hold the fabric evenly and do not crush finished stitches the way a hoop can when you move it. Small pieces can stay in the hoop as the final frame.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I work out the finished size of a cross stitch?

Divide the stitch count by your fabric’s stitches per inch. On 14 ct Aida, 140 stitches is 140 ÷ 14 = 10.00 in, or 25.4 cm. Repeat for the height. Linen over two uses half its thread count, so 28 ct counts as 14.

How much fabric should I cut?

Add your margin to both sides of each measurement. A 10.00 × 6.43 in design with a 3 in margin needs 16.00 × 12.43 in. Use 3 in if you plan to frame it, and 2 in for small pieces finished in a hoop.

What hoop size do I need?

This calculator picks the smallest standard hoop from 4 to 14 in whose diameter is at least the design diagonal plus 1 in. Designs too big for a 14 in hoop show Scroll frame or Q-Snap, because moving a hoop across stitches flattens them.

How many stitches per inch is 14 count Aida?

Exactly 14. That is what the count means: 14 squares per inch, or about 5.5 per centimetre. So 100 stitches finish at 7.14 in (18.1 cm). 18 ct fits the same stitches into 5.56 in (14.1 cm).

How many strands should I use on 14 count?

Use 2 strands on 14 ct for full coverage without crowding the holes. Use 3 on 11 ct, 2 on 16 ct, 1 or 2 on 18 ct and 1 on 22 ct. Use more strands if the fabric shows through and fewer if the holes clog.

Which tapestry needle goes with each count?

A #22 suits 11 ct, #24 suits 14 ct, #24 or #26 suits 16 ct, #26 suits 18 ct and #26 or #28 suits 22 ct and 32 ct linen. A higher number is a finer needle. It should slip through the hole without widening it.

How much floss does one color take?

On 14 ct with 2 strands, 4,000 stitches take 17.5 m, so 3 skeins of 8 m. With 3 strands, the same stitches take 26.3 m and 4 skeins. The estimate includes a 50 % allowance for tails and travel.

Does this calculator need a picture?

No. It works from numbers alone and sends nothing anywhere. Use it to plan fabric before you buy, then open the pattern maker to build the chart. The maker runs these same formulas, so the figures match.
