The short version

What a tablet reader needs

Built for Pattern Keeper and Markup R-XP: symbols are real text.

A reader app does not look at your chart the way you do. It reads the file. To follow a symbol, it needs that symbol stored as text in an embedded font, not as part of a picture. It also needs a regular square grid and one legend that ties each symbol to a floss number.

Scanned charts and PDFs made from images fail all three needs. So do charts where each symbol is a loose drawing. This pack writes every stitch as text and keeps the chart pages free of images, so there is nothing for the app to guess at.

What the .oxs file contains

An XML project format for chart software.

NodeHolds
chartThe root of the XML project.
propertiesWidth, height, title, stitches per inch and palette count.
paletteCloth at index 0, then each DMC number, name, color, symbol and strand count.
fullstitchesOne node per stitched cell, with x, y and palette index.
backstitchesStart and end corners for each line, with its palette index.

Positions count from 0 at the top left corner, so the file matches the chart you see. Change the width or color cap and export again: the palette count and stitch nodes follow your current chart.

FAQ

Common questions

What does a tablet chart reader need from a PDF?

It needs symbols stored as text in an embedded font, a square grid, and a legend that links each symbol to a floss number. A scanned or image-based chart gives the app nothing to read, so it cannot highlight symbols or count what you have stitched.

Is this an official Pattern Keeper file?

No. The pack is built for Pattern Keeper and Markup R-XP, but neither app has reviewed or endorsed this site. The PDF follows what those readers look for: real-text symbols, no chart images and one legend. Check that the legend matched after import.

Why do the tablet PDF sheets have no overlap?

Overlap helps on paper but can count stitches twice in a tracker. So the tablet PDF places sheets edge to edge at 50 × 70 stitches, while the printable pattern book keeps its 2-stitch gray overlap. Rulers keep counting across sheets in both files.

What is inside the Pattern Keeper + OXS ZIP?

Three files: the vector chart PDF, an Open Cross Stitch .oxs project and a short README. The .oxs lists the cloth, one palette item per DMC color, one stitch node for every stitched cell, and any backstitch lines.

Does backstitch carry into the files?

Yes. Backstitch stays as vector lines in the PDF and as backstitch nodes in the .oxs, with the DMC number attached. The readiness card shows how many lines were kept. Half stitches and French knots are not part of this version; charts hold full crosses and backstitch.

How many colors can a chart use?

Up to 90, each with its own symbol. The readiness card fails the symbol check above that limit. Large palettes work, but each extra color adds thread changes, and similar colors get harder to tell apart on a tablet screen.

Can I import the .oxs file back into this site?

No. This version writes .oxs but does not read it, and it does not import PDFs. Keep the .oxs for other chart software, and keep your source image if you want to rebuild the chart here with new settings.

Which plan unlocks the tablet files?

Every plan does: the $4.99 7-day pass, $7.99 monthly and $19.99 lifetime. Each one unlocks the same Pattern Keeper + OXS pack, the printable pattern book and the seller pack, without limits while it is active.
